Simple Homemade Tortillas

There’s something so satisfying about making tortillas from scratch — the smell of toasty flour, the soft dough in your hands, and that first warm bite fresh off the skillet. This week, I decided to try making homemade tortillas with a very special sous-chef: my 9-year-old! We snapped some photos along the way, and I’m excited to share our little kitchen adventure with you.
🫓 Why Make Tortillas at Home?
Store-bought tortillas are easy to grab, but fresh, homemade ones are on another level. They’re soft, warm, and surprisingly easy to make with just a few pantry staples. Plus, it’s a great recipe to get kids involved — mixing, rolling, and flipping are all hands-on and fun.
🌟 Easy Homemade Tortillas
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (or melted butter)
Instructions:
- Mix the Dough
In a large bowl, stir together the flour and salt. Add the warm water and oil, then mix until a shaggy dough forms. - Knead it Together
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it’s smooth and soft. (This was my 9-year-old’s favorite part — we took turns!) - Rest the Dough
Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rest for 20–30 minutes. This helps it roll out more easily. - Divide and Roll
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, then flatten with a rolling pin into a thin circle. Don’t worry about perfect shapes — ours were more “abstract art” but still delicious! - Cook on a Hot Skillet
Heat a dry skillet over medium heat. Cook each tortilla for about 1 minute per side, until you see golden spots and bubbles. - Enjoy!
Wrap them in a clean towel to keep warm as you go. These are amazing for tacos, quesadillas, or just snacking with butter.
👩🍳 Kid-Approved Moments
Making tortillas turned into a mini cooking class and bonding time. My kiddo loved watching the dough puff up and insisted on being the “official flipper.” It was messy, silly, and totally worth it.
